2024 Update!

What an Amazing Adventure 2023 was! There were some good and some not-so-good events.

What an Amazing Adventure 2023 was! There were some good and some not-so-good events.

After decades of being an avid gardener, 2023 was my first year of committing to “Flower Farmer” Status.  I must admit that I had no idea what all was involved with the Adventure that was beginning.  I was told that the first 2-3 years is a considerable learning experience, and there have been many failures along the way. But I am glad I jumped in with both feet (well, almost..still working full-time) and planted Zinnia. I have learned so much and will make changes with all the new knowledge this coming year.

I have often heard people say that anyone can grow them and that they are “wildflowers,” and they often want to buy them cheap.  Looking back, I would agree that many people can grow a Zinnia (along with other plants), but they are not growing wildly on any roadside or uncultivated field that I have seen.

I would challenge anyone who has not gardened to plant a few seeds this spring. Timing is highly important; sun or shade, and temperature are right up there in essential factors to grow them. How much water? Obtaining the seeds, contrary to popular belief, is not always cheap. Some varieties are much more expensive (10 seeds for $4.95 plus tax/shipping). Thankfully, not all are that expensive; however, when you need to plan a few hundred, it does add up. These are just the beginning.  Time, energy tools, etc. The list can go on. Not to mention harvesting and delivery with fuel costs. I conclude that flowers are Not Cheap just because they are local.

Supporting local small farmers/growers is extremely important and appreciated. You can come to the farm and see for yourself how your vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown. You can ask how the plants are treated, fertilizer and chemicals, and whether they are environmentally safe and safe for you to eat.

2024 Goals: Growing local fresh flowers,  herbs (edible & medicinal), and vegetables.  Sweet potatoes (several varieties), pineapples, herbs, and Flowers, of course!

My Goals

Petals & Caps will grow beautiful flowers for my community that bring national splendor and ambiance to any occasion.

Petals & Caps will grow beautiful flowers for my community that bring national splendor and ambiance to any occasion.

Flowers and mushrooms produced by Petals & Caps will be done in the greenest and most sustainable way possible. By continuously learning new aspects of sustainable gardening, I improve every season to bring even better flowers to my community.

Your event, your flowers, you pick them, and I grow them. Your dedicated bed will be tended with blooms at just the right time for your event.

When I have extra flowers, I look for markets. I want every bloom to enrich the life of someone. Every bloom is the possibility of bringing someone joy.
